The tension was building. The goals were flying in. The controllers were gripped tightly and, with every passing minute, the dream of lifting the coveted SWF Champions Trophy drew closer.

For ten young participants at Al Jamia Al Zahra, Halifax, what began as a FIFA PlayStation tournament quickly turned into an evening of excitement, friendship, healthy competition and unforgettable memories.

Organised as a youth-focused community activity, the tournament saw 10 children divided into two groups of five, with only the top two players from each group earning the right to progress to the semi-finals.

From there, the stakes were raised.

There was no second chance.

There was no room for error.

There was only the road to the final.

THE ROAD TO THE SEMI-FINALS

After a fiercely contested group stage, four young players emerged victorious and secured their places in the knockout rounds.

The semi-finals immediately delivered drama.

In the first encounter, Hashim Shahnawaz’s Portugal produced a commanding performance against Muhammad Karam’s Mexico, winning 4–0 and sending out an unmistakable warning to the rest of the competition.

But if Hashim’s route to the final was emphatic, the second semi-final was anything but straightforward.

A SEMI-FINAL FOR THE HISTORY BOOKS
